The Neo Nocturne consisting of 16-24 singers resonating with the intensity, elegance and sublimity of voices, evolved from the choir Nocturne Chorus which had its early foundation in the early 80s. Since then, the choir has achieved a robust image by harvesting awards, performing in various city and national events and bagging major prizes from numerous national choral competitions. Nocturne Chorus has a brilliant line up of musical director and conductors such as Prof. Rodolfo Delarmente, Prof. Elmo Makil, Mr. Arnel Ignacio, Ms. Jenny Villanueva, Prof. Arwin Tan and Mr. Domino Marcos to name a few that contributed to the shaping of its music and maturity of singers. And in 1994, the group is the recipient of the coveted Outstanding Citizens of the City, the award given by the Caloocan City Council for their notable contribution in bringing beautiful music and by being an exemplary art group.
Last 2007, under the auspices of its foremost Director Nonon V. Carandang together with Mr. Ariel R. Soriano, a senior member, the Nocturne Chorus modified its vision by affixing Neo to its name and shunned from using the word Chorus to signify its reformation. Simply as the Neo Nocturne, in its early formation has started creating music with a repertoire ranging from classical, musica sacra, folk, negro spirituals, ethnic, Broadway to pop, in any available language. The choir envisions performing and sharing music in the country and abroad and continuing its vibrant legacy of choral music and performance.
It bagged the 1st Place Award in the 2008 WOW! Philippines Christmas Chorale Competition held at the Intramuros Clamshell besting the choral representatives of the municipalities and cities in Metro Manila.
In its fourth concert season, the Neo Nocturne has succesfully staged major concerts with multiple sold out performances such as A Celebration of Rebirth (2007), Ode to Flight (2008), Painting Destiny (2009), Chorost (2010) and the most recent, KKK: Koro Kanta Kultura (2011).
It spearheaded the innovative lecture and choral festival titled Choral@turo last 2009. The event featured seasoned choristers and musicians such as Ms. Ana Tabita Piquero, Prof. Eudenice Palaruan, Prof. Jonathan Velasco and Prof. Mark Carpio together with their prize winning and world renowned choirs, thus, titled FOURte, with the acronym t.e. that stands for technic and exhibition as its initial thrust. This was followed by the succesful Choral@turo 2011, titled FFF: Foreign and Filipino Folk Songs that featured the country’s foremost chorale, the Philippine Madrigal Singers with conductor and music director Prof. Mark Carpio. This event received the Information-Performance Grant (Informance) by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. It is currently preparing for this year’s Choral@turo, Dansing: Choreography in Chorale Singing that will feature the University of the East Chorale under Ms. Anna Tabita Abeleda-Piquero as the choir’s conductor.
The Neo Nocturne performed in major local events and celebrations, and is now eyeing its initial international stints.
The choir is now under the baton and musical direction of Mr. Gian Rabang. Undoubtedly, Neo Nocturne is one of the dynamic choirs in the country today.
